EPA says to GM " KILL the Savana"

The EPA wants HD trucks and vans to reach 16 MPG combined for 2027, up from the 12 MPG needed for 2016.

But what does this mean for GM?

Well for one the EPA sees hybridization as the path to the promised land and the V8 seems to be anathema to that. The EPA explicitly asks GM to kill off the GMC Savana/Chevrolet Express twins in favour of something lithe from Europe like both Ford and RAM have. Opel Movano anyone?

GM is dependant on the old V8 vans, they haven't introduced efficient turbo charging nor explored weight reduction strategies. Could we see GM, in their dire state of commercial products, be the first of the mainstream manufacturers to offer a HD hybridized work van?

That's a long way to go and so far there has already been a lot of technological advancements going on.
What interests me the most is how they use hybrids and EV's with commerical vehicles.
