2002 gmc savana 3500 5.7 high beam issue multifunction switch steering column

my 2002 gmc savana 3500 5.7 cargo van has high beam issues.
started out for a time....high beams would cut off.
id flicker the stalk on column and it would come on briefly.
then, after replacing headlight switch and testing relays and fuses, it started to not work at all.
only sometimes would it go back to the fast click off intermittent issues.
i put a test light on wire from steering column that flashes when the high beam mode is selected on multifunction high beam lever.
it flashes.
but does not flash the high beam indicator on gauge panel or make headlights go bright.
mostly now, it does not work at all.
tested headlight bulbs. relays. fuses. wires. new headlight switch.

one odd thing is i could smack the dash top above the climate control knobs and radio and high beams would suddenly flash on then off.
at the same times, the fan motor speed switch would illuminate for a time period (it usually isnt lit like the other two climate knobs). ive checked the fan switch bulb. it looks ok. how could these two issue be related?
sometimes the fan speed switch light bulb isnt connected at all to the high beam issue. nor is smacking the dash.
i have even added a ground to the ground on the gauge cluster ground wire.
i have changed relays. fuses.
unplugged fan motor switch.
cleaned and tightened ground wires all over.

im confused!

the multifunction switch is my next fix. its expensive.

any tips on how to remove?
no need to mess with airbag right?
no special tools?

i have realized my basic trim level van does not have a body control module. thank god.

by the way, i have also checked the speaker box and daytime running light module. i thought it had to be there for van to operate. seems that it does not. runs fine. no more open door ding and daytime running lights!
