If you opt for a newer passenger Savana you get full side curtain airbags, nice, but you're still riding in a tin can...

but was that only limited smaller passenger vehicles and not GM's bigger vehicles like the savana?

Great for safety but it should make modifying the interior trickier if you intend to make it into a camper.

No doubt, unfortunately depending on what you want to do, removing those air bags might be required. As long as you're mindful of how you drive and your surroundings, side impacts are decreased by a lot.
